Infanticide video
This is a short video that does a great job of giving an overview of infanticide in India
as well as why it is practiced - reasons like dowry, poverty, and the low social
status of girls. The video finishes up talking about organizations that have
helped so far, but even that affects the girls emotionally in later life,
knowing that their parents abandoned them. The video then goes on to explain how
important education and awareness is about this particular issue. I think you
will enjoy it!

Effects of Dowry
Throughout my research so far, I’ve learned a lot about the cultural practices
of India. One of these practices is called dowry. Dowry has proved to be a major
contributor to female feticide and infanticide in India (Female Infanticide).
Many people, however, especially in the United States, are probably unfamiliar
with exactly what dowry is. I certainly was when I first started researching.
Dowry can be described as a gift in the form of lots of money or “valuable
goods” paid from the bride’s family to the groom’s family after their marriage
(Female Infanticide). Clearly this could be a problem for families that are not
financially well off, or for families that have a lot of daughters. It has
continued to be one of the top reasons for families to commit female feticide or
infanticide: they simply don’t want to have that financial problem. (Female
Infanticide).
Dowry is something that we need to pay close attention to if we are going
to raise awareness of feticide and infanticide in India effectively. I believe
that if the Indian government tries harder to put a complete stop to the
practice of dowry, many families won’t feel so pressured to commit this horrible
crime.

The Rhema Project
Recently, I completed a PSA Digital Story project for the “Best NonProfit Video Award”. In this digital story, I mention an organization known as “The Rhema Project” that is working against female feticide and infanticide in India. Many of the things that I have recently posted are from this organization and this website. I am choosing to do this blog post about this website because it is a great tool for understanding female feticide and infanticide in India. This website also has lots of pictures, videos, and stories about these practices and what they are doing to try and stop them. The Rhema Project also offers a variety of ways for a person to help, and explains where the money will be going to. If you want to check out more about female feticide and infanticide in India, find out what the Rhema Project is all about, or find a way to help, then follow this link to the official Rhema Project website! http://www.therhemaproject.org/
